Information about the NHL

So this blog entry I am going to talk about the history of the NHL this includes when it was founded, who the first teams were, a little bit about the Stanley Cup, and all the past winners.
To start the NHL was founded on November 26 1917. The National Hockey League was founded by Tommy Gordon. Tommy Gordon was born on June 9, 1886 in Ottowa, Canada.  The first team to win the Stanley Cup was the Toronto Arenas in 1918. This set the stage for all of the winners. The original six teams were the  Montreal Canadiens (founded in 1909), Toronto Maple Leafs (founded in 1917), Boston Bruins (founded in 1924), New York Rangers (founded in 1925), Detroit Red Wings (founded in 1921), and the Chicago Blackhawks (founded in 1926). These were the original teams and they are still around today. The Toronto Maple leafs were originally founded as the Toronto Arenas, and the Detroit Red Wings were first named the Detroit Cougars.
If it wasn’t for these teams I’m pretty sure that the NHL wouldn’t be what it is today. If you didn’t realize it most of the top teams now are the same as the original; six. These teams played their hearts out, and they put a lot of work in to be where they are today.
The Stanley Cup was named after Lord Stanley. The very first Stanley Cup was giving in 1893. The cup has been around through many sports, but the National Hockey League pretty much took over the cup. They are the only sports franchise that uses the cup, so in my eyes it’s theirs.
The most recent winners were the La Kings last year, and the year before it was the Boston Bruins, and the year before it was the Chicago Blackhawks. Those teams are the top teams every year.
